JBT ready for Morocco’s poultry industry showcase

JBT will be showcasing its innovative solutions for the poultry industry at the largest event of its kind for the sector in Morocco – Dawajine 2019 – which takes place in the city of Casablanca from November 26-28. The three-day exhibition covers every aspect of poultry processing from farming equipment through to processing, cooking, coating and packaging; all areas in which JBT is well represented.

As Kalid Saou, JBT’s Area Sales Manager for North Africa, explains, what sets Dawajine apart from other trade events of its ilk is the fact that it gives a real representation of the integrated nature of the poultry industry in Morocco; an industry where the company supplying the animal feed is often the same company doing the farming and the processing.

Kalid Saou says JBT will be taking the opportunity of having a presence at the show to highlight existing solutions for further processing, including the GYRoCOMPACT, which can efficiently freeze everything from pan fried chicken through to raw chicken breast and other pieces, as well as Schröder massaging technology and injectors, the industry standard for performance, consistency and reliability. 

JBT will also be highlighting one of the newest members of the JBT family, Prime Equipment Group, which became part of the company in June 2019. A manufacturer of turnkey primary and water re-use solutions to the poultry industry, Prime Equipment offers everything from quality control to chilling, deboning, skinning and portioning.

“Morocco is an important market for JBT and in terms of the poultry industry, it is really growing,” says Kalid Saou. “JBT has so many solutions we can provide to support poultry processors, from coating and cooking through to frying and freezing, that we will be highlighting at the show.”

When it comes to acquiring food production equipment, financing solutions to support growth are few and far between, with banks and suppliers alike often reluctant to lend towards the purchase of new machinery or equipment. One major exception is JBT whose own finance group, JBT Equipment Finance, offers funding support at very competitive rates and structures to enable the leasing, purchase or refurbing of food and beverage processing technologies.

“Unlike trucks or front-end loaders, food equipment and automated guided vehicles are unique assets that banks don’t readily understand, so they are generally uninterested in financing them,” explains Rich Cainan, JBT’s Director of Customer Finance. “If you are looking to buy a new freezer, oven, portioner or injector, Banks tend to be happy to let JBTEF do this financing. One of our most popular financing products is an Operating Lease that allows the customer to return or trade in equipment at the end of the term for a larger or more technologically advanced machine, something largely available only at JBT Equipment Finance”.

“We are also very competitive. It’s a rare day that a bank can beat our financing. So the other benefit to the customer is you are going to get the best deal from us.”

Complementary support
JBT Financing works with “Mom & Pop” producers and also some of the biggest names in the global food and beverage industry. But regardless of size, JBT Financing’s most popular financing plan are operating leases with a capped purchase option; a popular structure, unavailable from banks, that was introduced in response to customer demand.

There are three options at maturity for caps, explains Cainan. The customer can buy the equipment for no more than the cap (normally 14%-18% of the leased equipment), they can renew the lease which could include a refurb paid for by JBTEF, or they can trade in or return the equipment, receiving replacement machinery from JBT in the process. 

“It’s a great deal for the customer and that’s why we do so much business,” says Cainan. “A lot of the time, customers are growing, and they need bigger and better equipment to meet that growth. But at the same time, they will be under pressure from the bank over growing inventory and  receivables.  Financing your JBT equipment with JBTEF is a great solution because we are complementary to the bank and we do not compete with the bank on their line of credit.”

Covering costs
JBT Financing additionally offers significant benefits for new equipment. Typically, food processing equipment can have a build out time from 1-6 months. JBT Financing will fund the progress payments for the customer during assembly, offering a very competitive interest rate.

JBT Financing packages are not just limited to heavy duty machinery. JBT Financing solutions also cover soft costs, such as tax, installation and shipping, with JBTEF typically able to include 100% in their financing package. “This is a big deal because banks normally don’t want to finance soft costs or will usually ask for 20% in advance,” says Cainan. “In addition, we can include non-competing (non-JBT) equipment as part of the financing package. That means JBTEF will finance the entire new production line and most soft costs – something our competitors do not offer.”

JBT Avure’s PRoCARE: maximizing efficiency by minimizing downtime

Being able to maximize efficiency is essential for any company using High Pressure Processing (HPP) from JBT Avure to increase shelf life and ensure food safety, which is why downtime must be kept to a minimum. This is where a PRoCARE program from JBT Avure comes into play. 

With PRoCARE, equipment is inspected and maintained per the manufacturing standards to optimize performance and maintenance technicians receive on-going training.  Maintenance employee turnover is an issue customers are faced with around the globe.  With the training offered as part of PRoCARE, employees will be kept current with the required maintenance practices.

Preventative maintenance
The System Uptime Review Evaluation (SURE) from JBT Avure is one way of guarding against unnecessary HPP downtime and is available to Avure customers – free for the first year – as part of JBT’s PRoCARE preventative maintenance program.

As Tim Boyle, JBT Avure’s Director of Customer Care for HPP, explains, SURE focuses on carrying out a full visual inspection of machinery, measuring pre-stress levels and making sure all components are working at maximum efficiency. Another key element to the SURE inspection is ensuring all aspects of the HPP safety systems are working properly and customer personnel are following the correct safety protocols.     

“Safety is one of our main concerns in everything we do.  When you are running machines at 87,000 psi, we need to be sure the safety systems continue to perform as they were designed”, says Boyle. “HPP is a growing technology in the food industry and we want to ensure that it maintains its reputation for safety in terms of the food our customer’s process as well was with the operation of our equipment” he emphasizes.

Identifying problems
SURE allows JBT technicians to identify areas where maintenance is not being performed properly, even finding instances where customers are prematurely discarding thousands of dollars of parts which could easily be re-lapped and reused. “With the maintenance employee turnover issues our customers face, we often find that new employees don’t fully understand the maintenance requirements and how to perform the work.  This level of uncertainty can lead to less efficient work time and more machine downtime,” explains Boyle.

“Through the PRoCARE program’s combination of the SURE inspection and immediate training, we can identify areas of improvement and spend time training both new and existing employees.  This real time feedback is extremely effective in showing not just what needs to be done on the machine, but why it is important.”

The PRoCARE package of the SURE inspection and three days’ maintenance training is now included free for the first year when purchasing a new Avure HPP machine.
